The misconception of scientific theory, law and hypothesis


THEORY VS. SCIENTIFIC THEORY

¨Many people thought that a scientific theory is a speculation¨ 

THEORY - Hypothesis, speculation, guess, view, belief, opinion, thinking,suspicion etc.

SCIENTIFIC THEORY - in Science, the term Theory refers to a well substantiated explanation of some aspect of natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment. such fact supported theories are not ´guesses´ but reliable accounts of the real world.

HYPOTHESIS VS. SCIENTIFIC THEORY

HYPOTHESIS - is a suggested explanation for an observable phenomenon or a reasoned predict of a possible casual correlation among multiple phenomena.

SCIENTIFIC THEORY - in Science, Theory is tested, well substantiated, unifying explanation for a set of verified proven factors and always backed by evidence.

a hypothesis is an attempt to explain phenomena. It is a proposal, a guess used to understand and or predict something. a Theory is the result of testing a hypothesis and developing and an explanation that is assumed to be true about something. a Theory replaces the hypothesis after testing confirms the hypothesis or the hypothesis is modified and tested again until predictable results occur.

So, a person might make an observation and immediately form a hypothesis about why something happens the way it does. he/she test the hypothesis, modifies it if necessary and eventually develops a theory. The hypothesis can be right or wrong, but a theory is supposed to be true based upon scientific method. So when a hypothesis has been verified to be true, it become a theory.

SCIENTIFIC LAW VS. SCIENTIFIC THEORY

¨Many people thought that if the scientist find evidence that supports a hypothesis, the hypothesis is upgraded to a theory and if the theory is found to be correct it is upgraded to law. That is not how it works at all, theories and laws are separate parts of the scientific method, though they may evolve, they aren't upgraded to something else.

SCIENTIFIC LAW - is a description of an observed phenomenon. it doesn't explain why the phenomenon exists or what causes it. An independently and sufficiently verified description of a direct link between cause and effect of a phenomenon, deduced from experiments and observations.

SCIENTIFIC THEORY - is the explanation how and why the phenomenon happen.
